The Lake District is a great source of inspiration for me and while the landscapes and views play a part in that, for me I am keen to explore the heritage of the industry and people in the area. From farming on the fells to the mines and factories that provided so many with work in often challenging surroundings.
The From Mountains collection is part of my exploration into the balance between the beautiful surroundings and the not so seen industry of graphite and slate mines of the lakes.
I have chosen to use Derwent Graphite as it was originally sourced from the graphite mines on Honsiter Pass, a few miles from Keswick and the Derwent Pencil factory.
The use of colour in From The Mountains depicts the lights and tones one will often experience in the Lake District while mediums and different textures reference the harsh and often unforgiving nature of the landscape, weather and working conditions of the Lake District.
